Section 6.1 Introduction to Narratives

Narratives present specific examples of our teaching practices and students’ learning through detailed commentaries about videos documenting what happened in class. Such narratives are intended to help interested instructors envision engaging students in ‘thinking like a physicist’ during upper-level physics instruction. Narratives present what the students and instructor said and did, based upon insights articulated by the instructor and others while watching video recordings of the interactions.
- In Section 6.2, Example of Introducing a Concept with a Small White Board Question Followed by a Kinesthetic Activity presents a short narrative with three major segments. The context is the concept of flux in a static vector field.
- In Section 6.3, Example Wrap-up Discussions #1 and #2 present two long narratives with multiple segments. The context is the linear algebra that the students will need in their upcoming exploration of quantum mechanics.
- In
[cross-reference to target(s) "think" missing or not unique], Documenting and Interpreting Ways to Engage Students in ‘Thinking Like a Physicist’ describes development of the narratives presented in Section 6.3. - In Section 6.3, a table indicates the status of narratives currently available.
- In Section 6.4, Purpose, Preparation, and Power of Narratives discusses why and how we started developing these narratives as well as some of their effects on both experienced and new instructors.
