Section 2.2 Card Sorting

UNDER DEVELOPMENT

Veteran faculty can typically hold the content of a single course in their heads and/or use their own course schedule as a shorthand for the content. Based on experience, they have a strong sense of how long it takes to cover any given piece of that content. Thus, as individuals, they can straightforwardly rearrange this content from year-to-year, even in substantive ways. However, if the amount of content becomes significantly larger than a single course and/or if the process is collaborative, involving multiple faculty members, it will probably become necessary to support the process with an external representation.

Whatever external representation you choose should have the following features.

be easy to move individual items and groups of items;
the placement of items should clearly encode a time orientation;
use color coding and/or other distinguishing features that can encode several different categories;
available for multiple people to work on it collaboratively;
in a location where it can be preserved for several weeks.
